Gardening...Friend or Foe

I have this love/hate relationship when it comes to gardening. One would automatically assume, considering my landscaping background, that I would enjoy looking after a garden and my flower beds.....WRONG. The Lazy Lindsay comes out and thinks of a million other things that could get done before looking after the gardens.

I love the look of flowers growing around the house in a weed free flower bed. I could sit in my rocking chair on the porch for hours, looking at the butterflies flying around the pretty colored petals. After that bubble has popped I focus on reality and my hatred for weeding.

You see, when Ryan gets the urge to help me weed we can do everything in less than 1 hour. The problem with that....he hates it too.

Except I have found something that makes the situation so much better. Manipulating Ryan into doing it. That sounds a lot more cruel then what I actually mean. Let me explain:

Ever since I met Ryan he has told me about this "dream" of his to grow a giant pumpkin. He would constantly be doing research looking at links about different methods and pictures of prize winning pumpkins. Like this one:

I sat there and listened not really taking it too seriously until last year when I tried growing my own vegetable garden for the first time. With all the craziness of work and house renovations I never kept it up and the garden became a COMPLETE failure! I was pretty disappointed and in an effort to try to cheer me up Ryan told me "If we plant a pumpkin in part of the garden I'll help you keep it weeded"....JACKPOT!

So, for his birthday I bought him the best giant pumpkin seeds I could find and we begun the process of becoming GIANT pumpkin growers.

Ryan getting ready to plant the first seed. Notice the excitment in his smile?

First, we planted the seed into a small starter pot and covered it to give the effect of a green house. Two days later it sprouted. Two more days and we had to transfer it into a bigger pot.

This thing is crazy, it has a mind of it own. We have been feeding it milk and sugar every other day. Ryan has cleaned out the garden and fertilized it getting it already for us to plant. He is so excited and has already looked into how to submit it into the local fair exhibits.

That is our plant so far. No pumpkin yet but I will keep you posted. But for now, I have to get back to weeding, with lots of help of course! :-)

  1. Good luck with the pumpkin venture...now...I am thinking if this is part of gardening, will it not take over your garden and you wont be able to put anything else? Also, will the pumpkin be ready like this fall or is it something that grows and grows over the years?? LOL

  2. Well we will plant the vine in the soil but the pumpkin we are going to put to the side, on a pallet, so we can move it when it's done growing. Hopefully it still leaves me room for my other vegetables I want to grow.

The pumpkin should be fully grown for the Fair...hopefully....ha ha
