My Favorite Thing About Halloween

Happy Friday everyone!! I have been gone for the last two days to Mississauga, Ontario and even though it is just two days (really only one night) I had already started to miss home. It was a very successful business trip so I am uber exhausted from all the work over the last two days.

Halloween is this weekend (WOO HOO) and I think it is my second favorite holiday! I have so many happy memories from Halloween growing up. Dressing up, loading up in the car getting candy, sorting it at the end of the night and my personal favorite; getting the loot bags ready for the other kids!

Since I was old enough to remember my parents would let me pick out the candy, and get the look bags already for the other kids. I'm sure they were glad to pass this job along, but I didn't care, I love doing it!!

Over the years, I have come to call myself a "loot bag expert". There is certain format that needs to be followed.

1. Collect all the candy! In my world, the more candy/gifts the better!!! Essentials; chocolate, gum, suckers, chips, juice and of course gummy candies. Plus, screw those little baggies go get big brown paper bags for the candy, it fits more!!

** I always get told that I put way too much stuff in the baggies for kids but I don't care. Growing up, I knew what houses had the best candy and would get excited to go there. I want other kids to have fond memories of going to my house knowing there was a bag FULL of goodies.

2. Arrange all the candy in different groups. This allows you to do one bag at a time and so every bag gets the same amount. Yes, my brother and I would fight over who got the better loot bag.

3. Take all the bags that are needed and open them up. We only get about 15-20 kids so we do a total of 20 bags plus extra candy if more kids then expected show up.

4. Start loading them up!! Heavier items on the bottom. Juice, playdoh, pringles, candy and a couple of extra toys. This year our toys include playdoh and skeletons.

5. When all the bags have an even amount of candy take the leftovers and stick them in a bowl. This will be the extra candy in case we have extra kids this year. HID THIS will get snacked on! ha ha!

6. Staple the tops of the bags and you are all ready for little trick 'o treaters!

Yes, I am pretty crazy, anal particular about my candy bags but I so look forward to seeing the little witches and goblins eyes open wide when they see the big bag of candy coming their way.

I hope that my house will be remembered as a sure stop along their treat-or-treating route because "my house has good loot".

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and a "spook"tacular Halloween!

  1. We will be coming to your house Linds, no worries....and frankly, I remember the "outskirts" being SOOO much better when we were younger. We got BIG bags of chips, FULL chocolate bars and some houses, we just got to go in and fill up our bags...oh the excitement. We would do the beechgrove tour first then hit main street...
Main street gets lots of kids so they're goodies aren't NEARLY as good as the "outskirts"...however, I have only done about 5-6 houses with Maddy in the last two years and she has enough to last us till Christmas...mainly because it's friends and she would get "special" goody bags....

  2. We live so far out in the country and I have my whole life that I just trick-or-treated my grandparents and that was it so Halloween isn't as much fun I don't think. But it is great to see all the kids get so excited. We get to take my step-daughter around this year so that's kind of exciting!

  3. Now that I live on main street, big goodie bags are impossible - over 200 kids came to our door last year, but I think we still give out pretty good loot! I made sure each kid got a little bag of chips and a handful of candy - chocolate bars, rockets, suckers, twizzlers...and I even had baby treats!! So I hope the kids think of my place as decent loot for a town house. lol

  4. Oh Jill - Maddy loves stopping at your place, now - do you give the baby mum mum's (baby treats) to the small infants that are usually in a stroller fast asleep and their welfare, dressed up mother comes to the door and says "can i have one for da babee"
HAHAHA - tried to get a french accent there!
You hand them a baby mum mum and they say "she will take the bag tanks" LOL

  5. ha ha ha ha ! Jill Im going to dress up and bring Tucker to your door.."Can I have one for the puppy? He's asleep in the car.." ha ha ha ha

  6. LOL - No, some of the moms do NOT appreciate the Baby Mum Mums - they want the candy!! But there were a few who loved that I had baby year I'll have to remember the dog treats! hahaha!!
