Country Life Versus City Life

Happy Friday everyone! Can someone give me a high five for making it through May?! It really is an amazing thing when May finishes. There's no celebration but you just know that you are half way through the "crazy" time and that if you can just keep pushing, June will be over eventually too. 

We will be working on some more house projects after work on Saturday and trying to work on some jobs we've been putting off for some time. It's been a challenge to stay motivated to work in the evenings and on the weekends. When all we really want to do is nap and watch Netflix. But that's home ownership! :) 

I've lived in a few places in my life besides my home town. I spent my college years in the city of Guelph, Ontario and then moved to Surrey, B.C after I graduated. Both (Surrey especially) were big towns with large communities and I always felt a bit like a fish out of water. My whole life I have been a country girl and I thought living in a big city was more for me. Little did I know that I would end up right back where I was raised and even living in my childhood home. 

When Ryan and I were dating it was this unspoken agreement that we would live in my childhood home when we were married. It made sense because it is literally right across the road from our place of employment. 

Sometimes for fun, we talk about where we will live in our retirement. The hope is that when we are ready to retire, a next generation from the family will be ready to take over the house. The hope is that we will be in a smaller home, a little bit away from the farm but still not too far. 

We were driving around the other day and this conversation came up again. We had some criteria like a smaller home (1 level), smaller property, not a busy road, no close neighbors and yet not too far from a village. 

The one thing we were sure of, we DO NOT want to live in a busy city. 

It's funny how when you get older, the more you begin to appreciate the pace and life a small town has to offer. Sure, there are faults but the positives out weigh the negatives. It's a great place to raise a family and to be part of a community. 

I actually thinks it's better to be away from the conveniences of a city shopping center and it is too simple to buy things that are not necessary when it's so readily available to you. When we are staying in a busy city, the noise and smell of traffic is not all that pleasant to us. It's something we aren't use to.

We also want to have a grocery store, pharmacy, post office and hospital within a 30 minute driving distance. We want to live in the country but we also want to be reasonable about realities of life.  

There are so many different preferences and I think if I had known city life as a kid growing up, I would feel more comfortable in one and might even have settled way closer to a busy city. However, we know that we would never want to settle in the hustle and bustle of a big metropolis if we can help it. We dream of a quiet, back road life where we can continue our front porch rocking.
